Understanding Student Loans in Romania

Student loans are not currently offered by financial institutions in Romania, but the information below on the type of loans which had previously been offered could be useful for anyone considering studying medicine or dentistry in Romania.

All student loans are given in Romanian Leu (RON), the country’s national currency. Loans are typically made available only through local financial institutions who signed an agreement with your chosen academic institution. It was at the discretion of banks whether to provide student loans, so Study Medicine Europe does not bear any liability regarding the approval (or non-approval) of student loans.

Students are not required to repay the loan until after they have finished their studies and even then, there is a grace period before they need to start repaying the loan. The loan repayment generally involved a yearly fixed interest rate and students who have taken out loans do not need to pay any fees, commissions or expenses related to the granting or management of the loan.

The grace period begins upon conclusion of the loan agreement and ends when the student completes their final state exam or thesis, as agreed by all parties in the loan agreement. The total loan amount is usually repaid in monthly instalments, starting from the conclusion of the grace period. Loan repayments are usually deferred upon enrolment in full-time training for the graduate’s next educational qualification or scientific degree, and during each successive academic year.
