GMC Recognised Universities

Over the past few months, we have received many questions from medical students about the admission rules of the GMC. More specifically, we have been asked if graduates from particular universities who have managed to register with the GMC in the past, will still be able to register automatically in the future with the GMC without their university degree being assessed. Allow us to clarify that the GMC assesses each case individually by simply assessing each student’s documents (medical diploma & transcripts etc) only after they open an account with the GMC. So, the GMC has the right to reject an application if the respective medical school that the graduates studied no longer meet their requirements. Please see response from the GMC HERE confirming that applications are assessed on an individual basis.

To sum up, it is irrelevant if previous graduates of a particular university managed to register with the GMC in the past or if a medical university did not have any graduates that submitted their documents as what finally matters is only if the medical school meets the GMC’s requirements or not. We would highly recommend that you do your extensive research on the university that you are about to study; visit the premises they own instead of renting different facilities of other universities, carry the title of a ‘university’ and not any other subordinate title that is not equal to the high educational standards of a ‘university’, offer international exposure to run part of the course in the UK, offer student exchange programmes with UK Medical Schools etc.
